What Is Required to Register a Motorcycle in Colorado?
If you’re planning on purchasing a motorcycle in Colorado, it’s important to understand the registration requirements. By law, all motorcycles must be registered with the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) prior to riding it. While you don’t need a valid motorcycle license to register your motorcycle, you will also need to obtain the proper motorcycle endorsement for your driver’s license before riding it.
Registering your motorcycle involves providing the DMV with all required documentation to prove you own the bike and that it adheres to all legal standards. Registration is an important task to complete for several reasons:
- It establishes you as the legal owner of the motorcycle, which is important in the event that it gets stolen or you’re involved in a motorcycle accident
- It ensures the state’s database of vehicles on the road remains accurate
To avoid fines, it’s important to maintain valid registration throughout the duration of your ownership of the motorcycle. The following overview will help you understand what is required to complete this process.
Important Documents to Provide When Registering Your Motorcycle
You’ll need to present the following documents to the DMV when registering your motorcycle:
- Proof of Ownership – You’ll need to present a bill of sale or a valid title certificate to establish proof of ownership. If you purchase a new or used motorcycle from a dealership, the dealer will provide these documents at the time of the sale. If you purchase a used bike as part of a private sale, you’ll need to make sure the seller signs the title over to you and provides you with a bill of sale.
- Proof of Insurance – Colorado law requires you to insure your motorcycle prior to completing the registration process. You can provide proof of insurance by presenting an insurance card, a copy of your insurance policy, or a letter from your insurance company. Make sure your policy includes the minimum liability coverage required by the state.
- Identification – You’ll need to present a valid ID when registering your motorcycle. This can consist of a driver’s license or another government-issued photo ID.
- VIN Verification – If your motorcycle was purchased or previously registered in a different state, you ‘ll need to provide a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) verification. This can be completed at the DMV. You can also receive your VIN verification from a law enforcement officer or a licensed dealership.
- Application Form – You must provide a completed application form when registering your motorcycle.
Do I Need an Emissions Test to Register My Motorcycle in Colorado?
Emission test requirements vary by county, so you’ll need to check the regulations in the county where you live. In general, counties with stricter air quality standards are more likely to require an emissions test. In addition, you may need to undergo a safety inspection if your motorcycle is custom-made or from out of state.
Taxes and Registration Fees
Motorcycle registration fees depend on the bike’s weight and age. Additional fees may be required based on your county of residence and the type of license plate you select.
You’ll also need to pay ownership taxes based on the year of manufacture and the original taxable value when the motorcycle was brand new.
How Long Do I Have to Register My Motorcycle?
You must register your motorcycle within 60 days of purchase. If you recently moved to Colorado, you must register the motorcycle within 90 days of establishing residency.
Do I Need to Make an Appointment at the DMV to Register My Motorcycle?
While registration requirements vary by county, most counties in Colorado require an in-person DMV visit for first-time registration of a motorcycle. Check your county’s DMV office website for the requirements in your area. In most counties where in-person registration is required, an appointment will be needed. However, there are some rural counties that will allow walk-in appointments.
