What Courses Are Available to Learn How to Ride a Motorcycle?
To legally ride a motorcycle in Colorado, you need a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license. The easiest way to get a motorcycle endorsement is to take a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course. If you complete a MOST course, you just have to take your completion card to a driver’s license office and you can get a motorcycle endorsement on a new license without further testing.
A MOST course doesn’t just check the boxes for the legal requirements for licensing: it can teach you vital skills that will help you avoid a motorcycle accident. About 40% of motorcycle riders killed in motorcycle accidents don’t have an endorsement on their license, showing they likely didn’t obtain these skills. Fortunately, there are more than a dozen providers of MOST courses in the Denver Metro Area, so you don’t have to ride without knowledge.
MOST Course Types
The Colorado State Patrol identifies three types of MOST courses:
- Basic Riders Course (BRC)
- Experience Riders Course
- Three Wheel Course
The BRC is the most common course for people looking to add a motorcycle endorsement to their Colorado driver’s license. The BRC is designed to give people with little to no experience all the skills they need to safely operate a motorcycle. With five hours of classroom instruction, ten hours of riding instruction, and a combination of written and skills tests, you’ll be able to add an “M” endorsement to your driver’s license when you finish the course. Completing the course may even grant you an insurance discount.
The Experienced Riders Course is for riders who already have the basic skills. It’s designed as a refresher for experienced riders. The classroom instruction is informal, and there is only a limited amount of instruction on the motorcycle. This course takes only one day.
The Three Wheel Course is essentially the BRC, but focused on three-wheeled motorcycles. It covers “trikes” with one wheel in front and two wheels in front. Upon completion, you’ll be able to get a “3” endorsement on your Colorado driver’s license.
